Choosing an irrigation pump

Pump selection comes down to three numbers: how much water you need per minute, how far up and along it has to travel, and what pressure the emitters need at the far end. Get those three right and almost any decent pump will do the job for a decade. Get them wrong and no amount of money fixes it.

• Booster pumps — for sites that already have water but not enough pressure.
• Submersible borehole pumps — for water more than about 8 m below the pump.
• Surface centrifugal pumps — high volume from streams, ponds and open tanks close to the surface.
• Pressure vessel sets — add a buffer so the motor is not starting every time a valve opens.
• Solar pump kits — off-grid watering where running a cable is not worth the trench.
• Rainwater harvesting systems — tank-fed supply with automatic mains changeover.
